Indian TV shows based upon Indian novels
When you find some Indian drama worth hinge-watching, there are high chances that the show is based upon some popular novel. There is a lot of those good Indian television shows that are just otherwise plots taken up from various veteran writers and the characters are purely an imagination of their minds. Here are a few Indian television dramas that were loved at their time and derives their essence from Indian novels.
The Saraswatichandra had been based on the novel with same title and was written by Govardhanram Tripathi. It had a total of 444 episodes. The show was telecasted twice. Once in 1968 on DD national and once in 2013 on Star Plus. The drama is a comedy and love story between Saras and Kumud.
2. Sacred Games
The Sacred Games Series is available on Netflix and is based on Vikram Chandra’s 2006 thriller novel of the same name. It is the starring Saif ali Khan, Radhika Apte and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. It is based upon a criminal who is in Mumbai and a cynical police officer is behind him.
3 Pardes me hai mera Dil
The show was base upon Shah Rukh Khan’movie, ‘Pardes’ which on turn is based upon Manju Kapur’s Novel of 2008 called ‘The Immmigrant’. The story is about meeting your soulmate in different situation and falling in love with him in foreign land.
4. Byomkesh Bakshi
It is based upon the novel under the same head and is written by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. Rajit Kapur was telecasted in the role. The show aired on DD National. The show was very well acclaimed and most celebrated adaptation of the character. The show has continously aired two of it’s seasons.
5. Prem ya Paheli-Chandrakanta
It is a Hindi Language fantasy with all the mythical characters. It is based on the novel by Devaki Nandan Khatri, ‘Chandrakanta’. A king and queen are reborn after 100 years and eventually feel a drag towards each other.
6. Dil ki baaten Dil hi Jaane
It was a romance drama written by Mahesh Bhatt. The show aired around 2015 on Sony. Ram Kapoor and Gurdeep Kohli were essaying the main characters. . The show follows Ram, whose wife is suffering with blood cancer in third stage and wants to commit suicide so her husband and her kids would not worry about her and would move on in life.
7. Ye hain Mohabbatein
The show is still a favorite in many of the Indian houses. A Punjabi divorced man and a Tamil girl are united because of the man’s child, Ruhi. The show, however is partially based upon Manju Kapur’s Novel, ‘Custody’.
8. Ek tha Chander Ek thi Sudha
It is a love story and a biopic too based on the very famous novel, ‘Gunahon ke Devta’. The show aired on Life OK. It was a 20 days episode which foretold a tragic love story. Rahil Azam and Umang Jain played the lead roles.
The show has been based upon the very famous write’s work, ‘Lapataganj-Sharad Joshi ki Kahaniyon ka Pata’. It was a light-hearted show. The show managed to make two full seasons.
10. Neem ka Ped
Writen by Rahi Masoom Raza and aired on DD National. The title song was written by well known Nida Fazli and sung by everyones’ favorite, Jagjit Singh. The story is about a labor and his landlord. There is a lot to see for the landless labor but he decides to educate his son and his son becomes an MP after independence. But power makes him blind which eventually destroys him.
11. Tumhari Pakhi
The show is a drama and romance based upon the novel ‘Naba Bidahan’ by Saratchandra Chattopadhyay.
It is a historical fiction build around Rajasthan. It is the adaptaion of the famous novel The Twentieth Wife by author Indu Sundarsan. It revolves around Saleem and Noor Jahan who was his 20th wife.
13. Malgudi days
Widely known novel created by R.K. Narayan. The show also aired on DD National. R.K. Narayan was the brother to R.K. Laxman who was a renowned cartoonist.
